Quantum mechanics, photosynthesis and amazon and air.

Well when you think about the influences that affect your thoughts it is no wonder that when you come up with a good idea at least 10 others have thought it at the same time.

With it having been Rainforest week, the Rainforest is high in peoples consciousness if you are a TV or radio guy, you will know its been getting a fair bit of attention. Which is all very good news and also another worry we often put tucked away along with the many other scary things we have some responsibility for.

If you ignore the beauty and wonder and the amazing creatures of the forest disappearing rapidly, you really cannot ignore the fact that there will not be enough oxygen for us all if it were completely eradicated. The EastEnders Mitchell brother, Ross Kemp quoted 40 years untill the Amazon Rainforest is destroyed. Which is not a very long time is it?

My facts and figures are  some what confused, I cannot remember how many times I have been told about a football pitch a second destruction, or how many years it has left, but I really do not want for us to have to ‘manage’ without the trees.

But for as hopeful as I am, I can see that at some point this will become a huge issue. We might have to make our own oxygen rich air.

Will we all be constructing our own oxygen generators?

I love this simple way of making oxygen. But the side effects seem a little crazy, unless we can sell the hydrogen?

This article is fascinating. Making oxygen seems easy and possible when you read the “how to make an oxygen generator”. When you try to understand the complexities of the key steps of photosynthesis taken from an article from Discover by Mark Andrews, my hope for a ‘man made photosynthesis lab’ has some what diminished.

Peering deep into these proteins, Fleming and his colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley and at Washington University in St. Louis have discovered the driving engine of a key step in photosynthesis, the process by which plants and some microorganisms convert water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight into oxygen and carbohydrates. More efficient by far in its ability to convert energy than any operation devised by man, this cascade helps drive almost all life on earth. Remarkably, photosynthesis appears to derive its ferocious efficiency not from the familiar physical laws that govern the visible world but from the seemingly exotic rules of quantum mechanics, the physics of the subatomic world. Somehow, in every green plant or photosynthetic bacterium, the two disparate realms of physics not only meet but mesh harmoniously. Welcome to the strange new world of quantum biology.

So what is your plan for the future? I am seriously thinking of giving up gelatine and soya..and reducing my cosmetic & cream consumption. I would much rather try to preserve our natural oxygen providers..not to mention the algae and others, than to rely on a man made version!

I might get some test tubes and salt and a battery set up in the attic..you never know?
